Translations
When I’m not writing, I excavate and translate lost Russian literature, primarily that of Leonid Andreyev. It is less a hobby and more an act of devotion; I translate because I have found in Leonid (don’t laugh) a kind of soulmate, and I want to spend time with him. Much of his work is untranslated and unread, even by Russian speakers. I am currently making my way through his archives, magnetized especially to his early works, short stories, and letters to his mother.
Beyond my beloved Leonid, I’m drawn to writing that has slipped out of view: minor works by major writers, the unpublished and unfinished, letters, sketches, fragments, and other oddities. I want to poke my finger into the place where the monument cracks and the human shines through. That is why I translate.
Anyway, forgive the bareness of this page for now. It won’t be this way for long.
